In
1990, in an attempt to aid the Oil & Gas industry and
the Fishing industry to coexist peacefully, MMS issued regulations
that required abandoned well sites to be swept with a standard
shrimp trawl to insure that no foreign objects remain to liter
the ocean floor. This regulation, NTL 90-01 was created and
its predecessor, NTL 98-26 currently regulates this service
for the trawl boat industry.
B
& J Martin, Inc. has successfully completed over 1000
cassion, platform, and dryhole site clearance operations.
In 1992, in an effort to help collect the debris left on the
ocean floor at a more economical rate, Jimmie Martin, Sr.
design and patented the Gorilla Net®.
The
Gorilla Net® is constructed of a weave of 9/16-inch combination
cable at its opening with a body made of twine five times
the strength of a standard trawl net. The increased strength
of the net's body allows it to contain debris that would tear
standard nets. By using the Gorilla Net®, the oil companies
are able to remove debris for 20% of the cost of conventional
methods such as diving. The cost reduction is contributed
to the fact that the use of the Gorilla Net® greatly reduces
the number of nets torn and eliminates the need for divers
during the trawling operations.
